BACKGROUND OF COSDEC SWAKOPMUND

COSDEC Swakopmund was established in 2006 and is located in Swakopmund, Erongo Region in the Republic of Namibia. COSDEC Swakopmund offers structured courses (Level 1 and 2) with job attachments, and a variety of short courses to community members. Level 3 is also offered for Hospitality and Tourism.

The courses are offered at our training facilities in Mondesa and Mahetago, Swakopmund. COSDEC Swakopmund consists of 14 staff members, the Centre also has a Business Development Centre for SME’s.

2015 Graduation and Inauguration Ceremony

The 20th February 2015 marked a great day in the History of COSDEC Mahetago as the Centre celebrated the Inauguration of its building and its first graduation at the new Centre. 153 trainees from various trades graduated. The event was attended by prominent executives from different Industries and politicians, Including the Erongo Reg. Governor, his worship Cleophas Mutjavikua, Swakopmund Mayor, his worship Juuso Kambueshe, and the Arandis Mayor, his worship Daniel Muuhuura.

Donation by Namport

Namport through its Social Investment Fund (NSIF) sponsored N$50 000.00 to the COSDEC Swakopmund SME Incubation Program in 2016. The money will be shared equally between 4 SME Incubatees and will be used for their start-up expenses.

Namport through the NSIF also donated a container to COSDEC Swakopmund. The container will be used to store training materials and equipment. COSDEC Swakopmund is grateful for this generous donation and we are looking forward to a long relationship with Namport.

HSE Training

A training course on Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) was offered to COSDEC Swakopmund Staff by Rössing Uranium’s ’ Skills Trainer, Mr Paul Kooper. The Course was provided on a weekly basis for a period of one month.

Swakop Uranium Sponsorship

Swakop Uranium handed over a sponsorship of N$60 000.00 to COSDEC Swakopmund which 4 COSDEC Business Incubatees will be benefiting from.
The aim for the funds is for start-up capital. The Event was attended by the Erongo Regional Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua, Swakop Uranium Senior Vice President Corporate Affairs Dr Peng Xinjian, Swakop Uranium Vice-President Percy McCallum, COSDEC chairperson Ralph Bussel.

COSDEC  Swakopmund has been Accredited by NQA and is registered with NTA.

COSDEC Swakopmund welcomed new Business Incubatees with an Orientation event

The Business Incubation Program has been running for the past four years and has incubated sixteen small businesses to date. The program provides the small businesses with an Incubation unit, business training, mentorship and on hands business support services. We would like to thank the former COSDEC Swakopmund Business Incubatees; Paulina Alpheus, Gisela Garoes and Paulina Shipombo for sharing their experiences at the Orientation. We would like to also extend our sincerest gratitude to Heinrich Hafeni for his powerful motivational speech.

Maintenance at COSDEC Swakopmund

COSDEC Swakopmund Bricklaying and Plastering as well as the Welding Metal Fabrication trainees were busy maintaining the Centre this week. The Bricklaying trainees inserted interlocks walkways while the Welding trainees maintained the flag poles. COSDEC Swakopmund Trainee wins Silver at the National Skills Competition

We would like to congratulate Kefas Timoteus for winning the silver medal in the Joinery Category at the World Skills Namibia Competition on Sunday, 7 April 2019. Kefas also represented COSDEC Swakopmund in the 2017 Skills competition where he won the bronze prize in the same category. We are really proud as this motivates us to continue providing quality training.

Reaching out to Communities in the Erongo Region

The COSDEC Swakopmund Business Development Support Centre team spent a week on Community Outreach Training in the Erongo region. The team provided training on Business Management and Costing and Pricing to SMEs in Henties Bay, Arandis and Walvis Bay. The SMEs also received mentorship sessions after the training. Young women also received job ready training through the collaboration with Empowering Erongo Young Women Project. We would like to thank the Local Authorities in these towns for making this training courses available to their communities.

COSDEC Swakopmund former Incubatee wins the Namibia Creative Cup Competition

We would like to congratulate our former Business Incubatee Paulina Alfeus and her Power Six team for winning the Namibia Creative Business Cup, they will be representing Namibia in Copenhagen in Denmark. Power Six recycles oil drums to make beautiful furniture and Braai stands. They will also travel to Germany to make arrangements to export their products. Paulina was recently on the Good Morning Namibia show spoke about her business and winning the Namibia Creative Business Cup. Paulina and her team also exhibited their products at Wernhill Park in Windhoek recently amongst other Namibian producers and Manufacturers. Paulina applied for the Incubation program in 2017, COSDEC Swakopmund provided her with a unit to operate from, Business Training, Coaching and Mentorship. COSDEC Swakopmund encouraged innovation through a Business Idea Pitch Event

COSDEC Swakopmund encourages innovation and creativity: In many cases people come up with great business ideas but don’t ever have the courage to take the first step and start somewhere. The Business Idea Pitch event which was held at the Business Development Support Centre created a platform where people could share their ideas and receive advice from professionals. The winner of the Idea Pitch Event was Ms. Karin Amunyela, second place went to Ms. Gisela Garoes and third place to Ms. Johanna Thomas. The prices ranged from free business training courses, mentorship program and business support services.

The 2019 Orientation

The 2019 Orientation event took place at the Multi-Purpose Centre. The annual event is held to welcomed the new trainees with an official ceremony. Amongst the invited speakers were; The Swakopmund Constituency Councilor Hon. Juuso Kambueshe, COSDEF Executive Manager Mr Jeremy Muller, COSDEC Advisory board Chairperson Mr Ralph Bussel and Swakopmund Municipality Youth Development Officer Ms Sabina Kathena. We would like to extend our gratitude to all the amazing speakers. A big thanks goes to COSDEF Arts and Crafts Centre for joining the Orientation, our Advisory Board members, Coastal Drug Awareness Club and The Namibian Police Force GBV Protection Unit. The Centre had a fire Drill during our second day of Orientation. The trainees and staff practiced the emergency procedures to be used in case of a fire. All thanks goes to the Swakopmund Fire brigade for making time and availing their fire fighters and vehicles to be part of the drill.

The Business Development Support Centre (BDSC)

The Centre has 3 SME incubation units, which are given to entrepreneurs for a period of one year, to help them start or grow their small business and they are being provided with business mentorship, trainings and other support services. Under the (BDSC) the centre does external projects related to all the trades to increase the income of the centre. The BDSC give business training, coaching and mentoring to the community and everyone who is interested.
